Time will tell.P400 was better IMO.Still great buy
P401 Pros:
-Affordable, yet good quality ($44 bucks at my local home depot)
-"Corner Cat / Mouse" tip is very useful.
-Fits multiple sanding pads, including the ones found on amazon.
-Quiter than old P400 Model
-Better balanced than P400, but for flat, top-down sanding on horizontal surfaces ONLY.
Cons:
-No dust collecting bag
-Original P400 model was much more ergonomic to use. Look up photos of the old P400 corner cat and you will notice the difference in the handle. P400 was much easier to manipulate into any angle/orientation because of the easy to grip handle. I don't have small hands, but the new design adds tons of fatigue when you aren't sanding on a flat, horizontal surface. And while the old P400 was less balanced for this type of sanding, it was a very minor thing as this orientation is by far the easiest to compensate for . . . Just tilt it forward or lift the back end. By contrast, having to forearm grip the P401 in every other position is exhausting.
That said, I still bought one. I got my original P400 in 2006, and it finally died on 7/20/2021. 15 years of abuse at that price point, I'm willing to test the longevity of the new model. Higher price point doesn't always mean better. You can only buy so much skill/experience. After that, it's all about the user and his/her knowledge of consumables.
What are you sanding? Are you using the appropriate sandpaper? Do the holes line up? How much pressure are you applying?
Like trying to use a drill press with the incorrect bit, or wrong knife in the kitchen, knowledge and experience matter. If this one dies before a decade of abuse, I'll think about changing the number of stars.
I bought Ryobi with the assumption they'd all break in a few years and my intent was to "upgrade" when I got a better paying job. But Ryobi has outlasted some of the "better" brands I've purchased. In 15 years after legit abuse, only two 18v tools have broken . . . my brad nailer/stapler & my corner cat.
Being 70% cheaper on average, I'd rather get a new Ryobi every 15 years for 1/3 the price...if the new model lasts as long.
